Starting up in a new city is always a hectic blur. My days have been a constant cyclone of new people, new information, new car, new roads… I’ve gotten blisters from all the walking. My newest project is a gorgeous, generous mid-rise apartment building with two swimming pools, landscaped courtyards, closets big enough to be bedrooms… but honestly, what I like most about my newest home is its hallways.
The mid-rises I’ve worked in before had hotel-like hallways, always too narrow, dark, even carpeted – and of course, the reality is that carpeted public hallways usually smell like urine. But this place… this place has broad, tiled walkways with a diversity of colors and chair railing molding along the walls. I love the fact we have molding in the hallways because that means the builders took extra care to make it nice.
People take care of their doorways here, too. Sometimes they’re decorated with unusual mats or wreaths or some personal effect. It’s a little bit unusual. As I walked down the endless corridors the past few days, I thought a lot about how much a doormat can say about a person.
Most doormats were just the standard welcome mats. “Wipe your paws” said several. Some were flamboyantly artistic.
Some were like, “Welcome, but seriously… don’t mess with me.”
Then there was some serious Texas pride…
…some American pride in general…
…and one person from Oregon with pride.
This guy decided to be funny. Bet his name is Matt. You’re funny, Mat.
Some people were personalized.
Okay, OKAY! Dang, we get it: you are DEFINITELY proud of that initial.
Some doors showed Houston’s diverse, multicultural side.
A Jurassic Park fan lives here: what do you want to bet?
These cute owls. <3
These people all just want to watch the world burn…
Seriously, don’t EVER do this, especially in a Texas climate. Walk it to the trash chute. You don’t want to deal with the things that crawl out of the dark to wreak havoc on a densely populated apartment community that isn’t careful with trash.
And last but not least, the proud police daughter who mounted a camera on top of her door. *applause* I just want to know… was the camera her idea, or her dad’s…?
Hope your trails are just as happy,
