The 4th of July 2017 in St. Augustine, Florida

I have a road trip planned.  It’s supposed to be an epic tour of the southeastern United States from Birmingham to NOLA to Richmond to the Cumberland Islands with Tennessee and North Carolina somehow thrown in as well.  For now it’s on hold again, but I’m consoling myself with at least visiting the places in Florida that I’d pinned and wanderlusted after.

One of those places was St. Augustine.  I’d heard so much about how beautiful it was, how historic and attractive the city was, that I simply had to go.  With a full work holiday on the 4th of July and St. Augustine just forty minutes south of me, the opportunity was irresistible.  I set off armed with lists of “25 Things to see in St. Augustine” and “9 Things to Eat in St. Augustine”, etc.

I was worried about parking, so I left very early in the morning.  When I got out of the parking garage at 7:45 a.m., the place seemed deserted (and already ninety degrees Fahrenheit).  I walked to the fort, Castillo de san Marcos, and it was just me and the pidgeons.

By the time I finished exploring the fort I was hungry and went to Hot Shot Cafe for an enormous breakfast.

When I left, there were finally starting to be more people out walking around.  I followed the current down to the Lightner Museum, Plaza de la Constitution, Flagler College, a Greek Orthodox shrine and much more.

One particularly beautiful spot was Mission Nombre de Dios and its sacred grounds.  I’d seen pictures of the shrine itself, and the real thing was just as beautiful… but there was also a massive garden to explore.  I was alone, so I took a quick panoramic shot of the shrine’s inside.

Happy 4th of July – and happy summer!
