A day away on Georgia’s famous barrier island.
Two things put Cumberland Island on my bucket list: the wild ponies and the Dungeness Ruins. Who could resist an adventure to an island with wild ponies? And old ruins are so nostalgic. Jacksonville was only forty minutes away from St. Mary’s, the ferry departure point, and I booked my tickets as soon as I could.
St. Mary’s was curiously deserted because of the post-4th-of-July lull.
A couple of things I learned on the trip:
- South Georgia is too hot for human habitation, much less enjoyment, in the middle of July. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this when I was planning the trip. At least I was dressed appropriately!
- I enjoy doing more than seeing when I travel. Seeing is lovely, and photographing what you see is always fun, but to have an experience of doing something… that’s the best.
It was a lovely day of exploring. The day was so hot that the thunder could be heard across the island… and dark clouds put the mossy oaks and ruins on the island in an ominous mood.
The 4:45 pm ferry left the island as the lightning storm rolled in. “We repel lightning,” said the sailors confidently, so I took pictures of the dark clouds from the ship’s top deck.
A peaceful day on a remote island… some version of paradise.
